Julia-Rose Scianna, Portland Postpartum Doula

Julia-Rose Scianna, Portland Doula

For over 10 years, I’ve had the joy and honor of supporting PDX families through the 4th trimester, helping them emerge rested, confident, and ready for the next chapter. As a Newborn Care Specialist, Postpartum Doula, and Pediatric Sleep Consultant, there is little I love more than gently guiding families in creating and establishing healthy rhythms and systems that feel just right for their unique needs.

Caregiving has always been a natural part of my life—whether as a private nanny, a client advocate in a residential home, or working with the elderly. Each of these roles taught me valuable lessons, but my heart was always drawn back to working closely with growing families. It was through years of experience as a doula and NCS that I recognized the need for patient, judgment-free, and personalized sleep solutions for exhausted parents. This led me to pursue certification as a pediatric sleep consultant, which further deepened my ability to support families through one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, times in their lives.

When families work with me, they receive practical, hands-on care, a listening ear, and education that reflects my multi-layered training. My goal is to create space for you to enjoy quality time with your partner or older children, revisit hobbies, and, of course, tend to your own well-being—while knowing that your little one is safe and in the best of hands. I handle primary baby care, as well as tasks like baby laundry, bottle washing, and restocking diapering and breastfeeding stations. Above all, I’m here to share my expertise, offer reassurance, and guide you through this transition so that you can look back on this time feeling heard, truly cared for, and encouraged to find your footing every step of the way.

Nurturing and caregiving isn’t just my “day job”—it’s who I am at my core. Outside of my work, I care for our mini farm just outside of Portland, where we have goats, chickens, cats, and bees. Tending to my spring seedlings and summer garden is one of the joys that helps me get through the long PNW winters (I start planning my seed order the day after Winter Solstice!). After the harvest, I enjoy experimenting with food preservation methods and love cooking from scratch. Recently, I’ve been exploring vegan Indian cooking, and I have to say, it’s been a flavorful adventure! If you’re curious, I highly recommend checking out Vegan Richa’s recipes.

While I always encourage my clients to prioritize self-care, I believe in leading by example. I make sure to carve out time for yoga, enjoy a warm, spicy chai, dive into a good “romantasy” book, and indulge in plenty of massages—because I know that taking care of myself helps me show up fully for others.

Julia-Rose’s Testimonials

Julia is one of a kind ~ she is gentle, directed, confident, knowledgeable, and kind. She came into my life when I was terrified ~ I was six days postpartum and post-surgery, my milk was barely coming in. As a single mother in a difficult situation and without family in town to help, Julia swept in and not only became a resource and confidant for me, but a calming presence who wasn’t afraid to get into the grit of postpartum when I needed her to. Her knowledge of babies is also reassuring and calming. She was a resource for me on feeding, baby wearing, and sleeping, to name a few. She offered suggestions but didn’t push when I wasn’t ready. I recommend her whole heartedly and hope every new mother has the good fortune of being cared for and respected in the way that I did by Julia.

From the moment we met, Julia exuded empathy, expertise and encouragement. Julia helped our family as we welcomed our third child. She was a trusted, caring advisor as we got to know our third babe and settled into being a family of 5. Julia was an effective communicator, both in person and over text/phone. This gave us flexibility and quickly established trust, which were critical in having someone join an intimate experience for our family. She cared for ALL of us – from all things related to our new babe, to sweet nighttime run-ins with our toddlers, to extra support while partners traveled out of town. In my 3 postpartum experiences, I have found that the most impactful support comes from those who consider the full family in the wake of exciting (and sometimes daunting) change. Julia is the perfect intersection of deep newborn expertise with full-family empathy. I’m so glad we had the opportunity to work with her and highly recommend her to any and all families as they grow.

Julia-Rose was absolutely wonderful while working with our family, especially with our twin girls. She is very nurturing and patient, and can deftly handle caring for two newborns at once – which is no small task! She was also very helpful to me with some household duties and was always a very calm and kind presence in our home. I was able to get some sleep and peace of mind at the same time, which was so helpful. We are thankful to have worked with Julia-Rose, and would highly recommend her to any family!

My husband and I were pretty much terrified about adjusting to life and the sleep deprivation after the arrival of our first baby. We don’t have any family nearby, so we knew that finding additional support would be key to protecting our mental health and enjoying the postpartum period. I am so glad that we decided to invest in nighttime support for the first 8 weeks of our baby’s life! Working with Julia made the transition to a family of three so wonderful. While there are always challenges during the newborn stage, with Julia’s support, the challenges felt manageable and we were able to focus on the joys of new parenthood. Julia is a natural with babies and I always felt safe leaving our little one with her while we got some sleep. She also helped us become more confident as parents so that by the time it was time to part ways, we felt like we were definitely ready to ‘take our training wheels off.'”

Julia was absolutely incredible to work with! We were having trouble with our sleep rhythm and couldn’t quite figure out why. We had so many questions and Julia answered them all. She is warm, compassionate, understanding and so supportive. Julia made us feel seen and heard and her suggested tips were EXACTLY what our baby needed to get more sleep and stay asleep. Within just a couple of days, we had a wonderful routine down and the whole family began to get sleep! We can’t thank Julia enough for her help. We’ll definitely be reaching out in the future if we need more sleep guidance!

In the very vulnerable early days after my son was only a few weeks old, I first hired Julia to help me while my husband had to travel out of town. Instantly when I interviewed her, she was such a comforting presence, not just for me but for my son, who at this stage was borderline colicky and difficult to soothe. What I love about working with Julia is how perceptive and intuitive she is towards the baby and to my needs as well. She is full of helpful wisdom covering breastfeeding and baby’s development, which was a bonus gift for me as a new mother without family around and a lot of questions. I love too that she has a natural ability to see a need without prompting and she takes care of it. She is so considerate of our home and our space, she always asks before doing anything. I appreciate that I can truly actually relax and enjoy her help when she is around!
