Each week, more than twenty pregnant people in the United States will die of pregnancy and birth related causes, and Black and Indigenous communities are 5 times more likely to be impacted. The US rate of maternal mortality is higher than any other country in the developed world. To help address this public health emergency, Birth First Doulas has partnered with Portland New Family Fund to provide services to families who otherwise could not afford them.

Study after study shows that doula services are an immediate, low cost, and highly effective way of improving maternal-infant health outcomes. The research proves that doula support reduces birth complications, improves outcomes for mothers and babies, increases a person’s sense of satisfaction with their birth experience, and can decreases rates of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders.
